Final Portfolio

For my first choice, I decided to pick the number five project/illustration. I really like my cupcake illustration. I had a good photo reference for it, because I went out and got everything, created the scene, then took a photo of it. So I got every detail of it from that one picture and did not have to imagine what goes where or what to draw, which was nice. I wish the sprinkles were more well defined, but they were a real pain in the butt to paint. I think my favorite part of this is the paper cupcake holder, they sort of do look like the folds. I love the colors in this.

For my second choice, I picked the book covers assignment. I really like the concept of Gatsby's backyard to emphasize how wealthy he was and how beautiful his house was, but there's nobody in it, because even though he threw lavish parties for people, he was a very lonely man. My favorite part is the table, I really like that shade of red and the shadows of the white table cloth that the creases made. The window and that wall of the house could have been improved, but I tried putting in some line art of bricks on the wall, and it did not turn out well, so I just left it as a smooth outdoor wall.

For my third choice, I picked our classical CD covers. This one was for Vivaldi, the cool colors make it look more wintery, so I decided this was gonna be for his Winter album. I was surprised by the fact that I got the gold adornments on the face done, even though they took forever. I had a problem with the background by creating texture and definition. I did not want it to look flat. I wanted it to look like silky sheets or curtains. I like how the purple fades into blue on the face. I could have enhanced the background more, but I did not want to mess with the paper anymore, because it was starting to shred and get really thin.

For my fourth choice, I chose our Life and Death assignment. I really did not have anything better to choose from. The only part I like about this is the ketchup bottle. I did not have a photo reference for the tomatoes, so it was hard creating highlights and stuff. I just followed Rusty's comments. The life part looks more like a cartoon illustration while the death/ketchup bottle is a product illustration, so they do not really coincide well together. I wish that this piece only contained the ketchup bottle. I've realized from this class that I really like to illustrate food items more than anything else.

I chose The Great Gatsby for our book cover assignment. I actually googled Great Gatsby and a screenshot of The Great Gatsby game popped up in the images, it looks like it might be Gatsby's backyard. I really liked it, so I decided to base my illustration on it. I really like the scenery aspect of it. It was difficult getting the perspective on the railing and the stairs. I desaturated the layout a bit to make it look less intense, color wise. My favorite part is the table, I think I spent the most time getting the shadows on the creases almost right.

World Record

The world's smallest living dog, in terms of height, is a long-haired, female Chihuahua named Boo Boo, who measured 10.16 cm (4 in) tall on 12 May 2007 and is owned by Lana Elswick of Raceland, Kentucky, United States. It was either this or the woman with the smallest waist. I wish I would have made this more defined, it still looks flat. I had to go into photoshop and collage pictures to create photo references. I wish I would have done more with the guys pant leg and shoe. The sky could have been improved also. I do like the roof though, and some parts of the grass.

This is my Society of Illustrators Illustration. The idea came from my friend, Greg. I asked him what I should sketch and he replied with an egg in a frying pan, so that is what started it all. It was hard painting without a correct photo reference. I found a picture of an egg in a frying pan but not one with them being on a hot plate so I sort of had to mess around with it. I found a picture of a hot plate and just tried to combine it with the egg and frying pan picture. This is the result.

Life- Zebra, Death- Coat
People in class like this one, but thought I could do more with it. I really did not want to draw another zebra. I only drew a zebra, because a cheetah was too hard to draw.

Life- Tomato Plant, Death- Ketchup

I did not want to do a live tomato plant, then a dead tomato plant, so I aimed toward humor and went with a ketchup bottle. Rusty approved this one. I'm glad, because I really did not want to draw that zebra.

I was stuck on the third comp idea. So I just drew my roll of paper towel on the dispenser at my apartment and drew a tree with it.

Number 5 Final

Got my number 5 assignment done a while ago, but I'm posting it now, so it doesn't get mixed up with the midterm portfolio. I think this is one of my strongest pieces. I worked a lot on the fine details of the icing and the highlights on the candle. The sprinkles were hard to create and improve, because they were so small. The paper cup part was also difficult in creating the folds.

3 TRADITIONAL LINE ART ILLUSTRATIONS:

These were the line art illustrations that Rusty told me to redo and we had to redo three on illustration board, so I feel like they are the most decent ones to pick out of the batch. I like the simpleness of my profile in the first one. I like the lines on the tree in the second one. I like how I added in the bricks (not all of them, just several) for the apartment building. I feel like line art is so boring without color. It was so hard to create shadows with just a black sharpie.

2 WATERCOLOR ILLUSTRATIONS:

Even though it was a 20 x 30 illustration, I did not think painting went that horribly. It did take like five hours, but it was great working on it on a Sunday morning not feeling rushed. I really wanted to capture all the pretty colors of the sunset, but I added my own mix of colors. I knew that I wanted to use a lot of different colors. For the pretzel, it took forever on this small thing! It took forever to mix the correct shade of brown/orange shade for the pretzel. I actually freehanded sketched out the outline of this one, instead of tracing it, which took so long, because it always ended up looking wrong or fat. And then I had to add all the highlights and then I had to add the salt. But in the end, I think it turned out alright, I mean it looks like a pretzel and makes me want to eat one really bad.

3 TRADITIONAL LINE AND COLOR ILLUSTRATIONS:

So this self-portrait, I think is the best one out of the five I had to do. I like the composition and the angle, and I think it looks most like me. I love my hummingbird! I love the colors of the feathers. I think it turned out pretty well, but it could be a little less flat and more three-dimensional. I also like my elephant, but I had trouble with filling in the grass. I really like his ears!

1 GOUACHE ILLUSTRATION:

Three of my favorite things: Audrey Hepburn, a rose and a golden retriever puppy. I wish it was less flat, but I didn't want to mess with it anymore. I added more definition to her her arms, neck, and face. I added highlights to her lips. The rose was hard to work out, with all the different shades and layers, it got very frustrating. The puppy still looks flat. but I added some brush strokes to make it look more like fur.

1 DIGITAL LINE ART ILLUSTRATION:

I just really like this tree illustration. I like the texture and style of the fence and dirt. It looks like something that can be in a Winnie the Pooh book. It seems very peaceful and is a simple line drawing.

I really like this thumbtack illustration. I like how it looks like its stuck through the paper it was on when it was printed out. It could be better, but it was one of my first attempts at digital line art.

1 MY CHOICE:

I decided to choose my peacock watercolor illustration. I really like the colors of it. The feathers are very interesting to look at and I really like the composition. I wish that it was more three-dimentional and had more definition to the peacock. I really like the bright green feathers in the back. I think this was a good first attempt at a very large watercolor illustration.

This is my Number 5 Illustration in Watercolor. I definitely am better at painting objects and food than painting people or at least I don't completely suck at it. So I bought a cupcake and a number 5 candle and took a picture, printed out a black and white copy, and traced it on stonehenge paper on the Lucy. I think the sprinkles are the hardest part, because there are so many of them, and I still need to make them look more three-dimensional, other than just flat circles on a cupcake. I need to fix the outline of the candle and work on the shadows of the cupcake and fix the white on the candle around the circles. I think this turned out pretty decent for a first attempt.

Abe Lincoln

So when I was doing my research, I was reading about how Abe Lincoln was kind of a prankster, which led me to thinking about painting him putting a whoppie cushion on somebody's chair. I googled who was vice president at the time, turned out to be Andrew Johnson, so I decided to use his name. I hate this assignment. The size was way to big to work with and I could not get the body position and shape right. I also hated using gouache. I feel like my painting is a cartoon and looks drawn by a fourth grader. I was definitely on the struggle bus with this project.

A golden retriever puppy, a rose, and Audrey Hepburn were the first three things that popped into my mind, so i decided to paint them. Gouache is hard to work with, I kinda hate it. I want to go back to watercolor. I hate how every time I touch the painting, gouache would get on my fingers. I think it could look better and more defined, but I didn't want to mess with it anymore and have it look even worse for being over worked.

For my second 20 by 30 watercolor, I decided to paint another landscape, a sunset! I've always wanted to paint a pretty sunset in watercolor/paint. This time, it was less difficult, because I knew what I was going to expect. I made the watercolor less runny and waited for it to dry, before I would paint over a section. I took my time this time around. It turned out very colorful, because I had to get every accent of color, purple, blue, magenta, yellow, etc. For the water, I painted in bits to create a neat reflection for the water. I like it, I really love all of the colors.

I wanted to paint a pretzel, I thought it would be interesting. Who knew that it would be such a pain to mix so many different shades of brown? Whoops. This took about 5 hours to finish. I actually free-handed the pretzel, that's why some parts are a little odd looking. Aside from the amount of time to finish, I actually enjoyed this project, because it helped me improve my watercoloring abilities. I'm just glad that it ended up looking like a pretzel.

I decided to do simple line art pieces with color. Since I'm not the best at using the wacom tablet, I stuck with simple images. They look like pages off of a coloring book. I really like the bunny in the hot air balloon. Once I started getting the hang of using the pen, I stopped using the mouse to click on things, which was really nice.

This was my first landscape watercolor. I just typed in landscape in the search bar on flickr and found this cottage in the woods. I think it was like the first time using watercolor on a huge sheet of paper, so it was very difficult to handle the watercolor on such a large space. I wish I made the sunset/sunrise better, blended in more colors. I wish the trees were more defined and the foreground looked better.

Here are my 5 Watercolor Self Portraits with Line Art. I took pictures and printed them out and transferred it on a 7x7 piece of watercolor paper using the Lucy. I feel like they could have looked better, because I was just rushing to finish them at 2am. I like the perspective of the one where my top is purple, it is my favorite. On the one where I'm looking forward with my glasses, I messed up on the face, black got in the cream color, so it made my chin dark, so I had to go over it over and over again with the cream color. Overall, I think it was a good attempt.

5 Wacom Sketches

We had to do 5 sketches digitally on the Wacom Tablet. I'm starting to get used to it, but it's annoying when I keep pressing the button on the pen and the little menu pops up every time. I forget to change the brush size and stroke, because I was in a hurry to just get them done, I didn't want to mess with them. I only changed the stroke and size of the brush on the tree sketch, which is the one I like the best. The koala bear was the first one I sketched, so it's not good. It looks like it has bangs which was suppose to be its darker fur or shadow. I traced all of these images.

So I hate doing portraits of people. They never turn out to look like who they're suppose to. So having to draw somebody from memory just this assignment terrifying for me. I decided to draw my best friend from back home in St. Louis, Stephania. This does not look like her, the only thing I got right was her blonde hair. Her head turned out smaller than her upper body and I made her hair look too heavy.

Animal Watercolor!

I decided that I really wanted to watercolor a peacock and an elephant, meaning no sleep...and I also found an adorable picture of the prettiest hummingbird ever. I free handed the peacock and elephant, but I traced the hummingbird on the light table in pencil first. I watercolored them first then added line art in black sharpie. I drew the baby elephant first, I wished I didn't center him and had made the grass better. I love the colors that I somehow mixed on the hummingbird. It took forever drawing in all those little feathers. The peacock was what I worked on last. There were a lot of lines for the background feathers that took so long to do. I was working on the feathers at around 2 or 3 in the morning before it was due, so I was kinda falling asleep during the whole process, so I could have turned out a little better :)

We chose three out of the mound of small line art pieces to copy on the Lucy onto a 10 x 12.5 piece of illustration board. It took a while to get used to the Lucy, but tracing definitely makes the process so much faster. I think my house looks better, this time I kinda changed a few things like adding bricks like Rusty had requested. On the tree piece, I tried to make the tree more round by adding those curvy lines. I'm still having problems with my line strokes. I wished they were more natural, instead they always end up sloppy and blahh.

These are my 10 Watercolor pieces of random stuff and incorporate line drawing in them as well. I actually enjoyed doing these. I think I am improving. I'm more patient and spending more time to actually make it look good and not like crap. I was eating McDonalds for dinner so I decided to paint it. Then I started painting vegetables, which I thought was kinda fun. I've realized that I like painting food. Then I just started painting random stuff in my room like an Ipod, a sandal, a necklace. I really like my apple, green pepper, and onion, they actually look pretty decent and resemble what they're suppose to be.

These are my 10 Watercolor of Landscape pieces. I just painted whatever was near my apartment and the field behind C-Hall. I tried to find good parts around campus that had a nice sunset. But it's sooo hard to find good sunsets around Kirksville. So I kinda added more colors to the sunsets I painted. Mainly I started by painting a light blue base and wait for it to dry to start adding more color for the sky and then started adding green for trees and stuff. Waiting for it to dry is the hardest part.

These are my 10 Watercolor Architecture pieces. I don't like painting or drawing architecture. Next time, I should learn to use a ruler, because my straight lines suck. I do like the clock one that I painted, I think it actually does look like the clock tower outside of Pickler Library. The fountain was kinda a mess for me, drawing bricks is very difficult. I need to learn to use thinner lines, because all my lines turn out so thick and dark, which makes it very distracting and centers your attention on that one little part instead of seeing the piece as a whole.

10 Sketches of People

One thing I hate is drawing faces, I am terrible at it if I don't spend a lot of time working on it. A quick sketch of somebody's face is very frustrating to do. So I just sketched backs or side profiles of people. I used a picture of me to sketch and took pictures of other people to sketch later on. I wish I was better with making contour lines, all my lines look like it's really heavy and drawn over and over again. I tried to do "stalker sketches" in the library, but there was nobody there during the day and I felt very awkward, so I just sketched people I knew like my roommate. I also found friends to sketch when I went to dinner at Colton's. I felt very awkward sketching at a restaurant.

Here we go again...10 more sketches but of nature. I actually think that this was the easiest of all the sketches for me. I just like sketching things in nature, like flowers and trees. It's just difficult to get the details of the trunks of trees and the lines of a flower. I really enjoy sketching landscapes, I find it easiest to think of it as not having to look perfect. Unlike sketching people, where you have to get the proportions correct. I am not looking forward to sketching people...

10 Architectural Sketches

This homework assignment, I felt was easier to do than the other sketches, definitely simpler than the 10 sketches of one object. I just walked around campus and downtown Kirksville and took pictures of interesting buildings I saw and sketched what I saw looking at the pictures. It was just hard getting the angles right and making it look three dimensional. Each sketch took me about 30-40 minutes long to do. I still need to work on shading, so it looks like value instead of hair. I don't think I used pencil first on these, I think I just started sketching with the pen.

Okay, this time, the sketches sucked. It took long trying to think up of different ways to draw one item than actually drawing it. I couldn't get the reflection and steel look of the saucepan. I really like maybe three of the sketches. It was hard trying to get the proportions right and I had to start out using a pencil for many of them. Each one took me about 20-30 minutes to sketch.

So here are my 10 sketches. I found the hardest part was trying to find 10 items I wanted to draw and trying to come up with a good composition. I think that I like using the pen the best, but the sharpie is great at making thicker lines. I think that when it comes to fine detail, outlining everything in pencil first makes it much simpler and then going over it with a pen or marker. Creating shadows with a pen is much more difficult than using a pencil, because with a pencil, you can smudge and it's more easily to control and erase and a pen is permanent.

Rapala POP

If I printed this out, I would have to trim off the sides, because they did not line up when I reflected it. but basically it folds like a triangle and can sit on the countertop by the cash register or the shelves of sporting goods stores, like Dick's Sporting Goods. The background is a close up picture of a cool design on a jewelry box from Hidden Treasures. I thought it was good to resemble movement.

World Guide Travel Broshure

This is a twenty page broshure/booklet for study abroad. I got permission to take pictures from my friends' facebook pages who are studying abroad in London and Italy and they also visited some other places as well like France. This was a huge challenge, because we had to work with mass amount of text and had to fit everything on one page and have it look good and not too overwhelming. This was actually suppose to have been started before midterm break, but it continued throughout post midterm for me. I do like how it turned out, I think the pictures added nice touches to the overall pieces.

The total on this was 32.5 hours.

Ramen Noodles

It took me a while to actually finally start on the Ramen Noodles Layout, mainly because I had to go out and buy ramen, make it, and take pictures, or illustrate it. I finally started taking pictures, next was figuring what to do with the pictures and how to create an interesting layout. I think the colorful placemat makes the layout look more interesting and eye catching.

I spent 5.5 hours on this, which I think was over budget. Whoops!

Society of Illustrators

I had a hard time with the Society of Illustrators Poster. I did not know what concept to do for this and I was really bad at making illustrations. I found this picture from a friend and I really loved the vibrant colors of the fruits and strawberries, so I used it for the four colored side. On the two colored side, I illustrated the outlines of the strawberries and repeated them around the border.

This took 5.5 hours.

Audio CD Booklet (Pride and Prejudice)

This actually was not very difficult for me to work on. It was just a pain on deciding what book to do, because they were all such interesting choices and if I picked the wrong one for me to do, that would have sucked. But I chose Pride and Prejudice, because I really like the old time-y, victorian style, classy, feel to the book. I just went to Hidden Treasures and shot pictures of antique things and old clocks and figurines. I used the old CD template from Vis Com I. I found the print online and re-created it using illustrator.

This took 9.5 hours, which was over budget, but I really like the way that it turned out.

Book Dust Cover (Pride and Prejudice)

The same goes for the book dust cover. It was pretty easy what I wanted to do with it, once I was done with the CD, because it was the same style. I really like the binding how it shows the lace, I think that's my favorite part. I did not want to put any pictures on it, because I did not want anything to distract from the print and make it look too busy.

Midterm Portfolio

The Red Barn Poster was one of the earlier designs we had to do for class. I always have trouble coming up with a concept at first, it was very frustrating. I think I usually find my ideas from listening to music and I would hear a nice line of lyrics and change it up a bit and use it as a tagline. I got this tagline from "Express Yourself" by Madonna. Then I needed some kind of visual item, so I started researching and googling random things online. I finally looked up butterflies and found a picture and traced it in illustrator. This was only in black and white, so to make it less bland, I made some of the text lighter and gray. I really like how this poster turned out, because I feel like it has great movement in it. I think that the butterflies is an attention getter and there's just the right amount of information on it looking too busy.
We were given 5 hours and I used 4.5 hours!

The Jazz Poster. Again I got the tagline by listening to "Sway to the Rhythm of Love" by the Plain White Ts, then I just changed up the lyrics a little bit by putting in "some rhythm and blues". I came across this awesome picture of a saxophone made up of smaller saxophones, guitars, other instruments, and people. I thought it was a great picture to go with my concept, because there's movement in it and the people look like they are "swaying". This was a two color poster. The background was originally gray, then Rusty told me to change it to blue. So I had the picture that I recreated in Illustrator and text on the layout and the background was a problem, because it looked very boring, so I decided to fill it with words and started googling jazzy song titles and found "From the Soul" and "Feeling Good". I italicized them to go with the theme of movement. I like the way that this poster turned out, I think the picture is intriguing and would grab people's attention and there's just the right amount of information on it.

We were given 5 hours and I used 4.8 hours!

How Safe? Magazine Spread. I came across this picture on google when I was researching for pictures when I was brainstorming ideas for my sketches. I just thought this picture was so clever with an apple being sewn, really relates to how people can tamper with food and consumers would never know which was what I got from the text. Rusty told me to curve the text around the apple and put the text box next to the apple, which I really like. I think it does look more visually pleasing. I definitely liked working on this spread more than "The Secret to Feeling Full" magazine layout, because there is less text. It sucked making all of the text fit together and not have any orphans and widows. Those were annoying! But I think this layout turned out well. I like the colors!

Herpetology Poster...well the first design with the tortoise and the hare was a bust. So big thanks goes out to Shelby for showing me this picture on the National Geographic website, because it's awesome. The tagline of "Experience Beauty in a Whole New Light" just popped into my head, and I was having so much trouble with finding a picture online, then Shelby came to the rescue! Making the text visible on this background was difficult, because most colors I tried would not show up well. Rusty had me dim one of the lights on the bottom, so the world "light" can be read easily. I really like the way this turned out, I think people would look at it, because the picture looks funny with a frog eating a christmas light. Native American Heritage Month Poster Series. I wanted to do an idea with spirit animals, because that has always fascinated me and it's the first thing that pops into my mind with the mention of Native Americans. So it's get to know your spirit animal then put a picture of an animal and add a description of it, then list the events is basically my whole layout design. I had trouble find good black and white pictures of animals to use. I had a bee for one of my layouts and Rusty did not like it so I changed it to an alligator. It was difficult trying to making all the animals fit the page well and be the same size. Getting the text to layout and look good was difficult, it was originally split into two columns and had three events on one side and two on the other, but I finally split them up into five columns and have one event in each column and I think this way looks so much better. I really like the dark red and black together. This was a two color poster. I'm happy with the way these posters turned out, I think they bring out a strong message and people would be able to get the message and pay attention.

Yay! Herpetology poster got approved finally! The picture is great, it was just a pain working with text and making it fit well with the image. I'm glad with the way it turned out.

I redid The Secret of Feeling Full spread. Rusty described it as "being a mile away" and too box-y, so hopefully I can improve it sometime soon. I do really like the colors.

Shhhhhhhhh was basically my concept, because it's a secret. I really like the girl's ring in the picture, I think it adds a nice touch to it and it doesn't look boring. There was a lot of text to work with, which was a real pain.

We were given text and have to make a magazine spread out of it. I was looking through google and I came across this picture of an apple that is sewn and thought it would be a clever concept that you really don't know what you're eating. I like working with a small amount of text. :)

We were given a document of text and we needed to make a magazine spread incorporated the copy of text in it. I shot my own photography, just stacked up a bunch of books and took pictures of an open book. Stress stacks up like books and that's how the concept came to be.

5 Fonts

Our assignment was to choose 5 fonts to have with us if we were stranded on a deserted island. These typefaces will be the only ones that we use in our projects from now on. I've always liked Georgia, it was always the go to font that I chose to use in papers when we didn't have to use Times New Roman. I like Garamond, because oddly it reminds me of the words on the label of a chocolate bar, probably because it sounds like almond. Baskerville, I think of the typefaces in books and seems old-fashioned and I really like that. I have not worked with Clarendon yet, but I saw it and it looks interesting.

Our first design for Vis. Com. II was to create a 13 x 19in informational/promotional poster for a typeface that we chose from a list. We had to use a bleed, only black for the color, and include a variety of upper and lower case letterform and numbers. I chose the typeface, clearface, because I thought it was a pretty playful font to work with. We were given three hours to finish this design and this is my finished product.
